Popol Vuh

This ancient document is known as the Sacred Book of the K’iche’. The significance of the Popol Vuh is that there are very few early accounts of Mesoamerican mythologies. Its survival is attributable to the 17th century Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez, was working in Chichicastenango where he found a moldy manuscript in a wall of the convent of the Church. It related the history of the Maya-K’iche’ people and their traditions concerning their mythology and symbols.

He compiled a manuscript in Spanish circa 1701 either from an earlier 16th century manuscript by a literate K’iche’ nobleman or Fr. Ximénez transcribed an oral account that had survived.
